Blogroll Shout-Outs.

A few weeks back on the way home from work, I bumped into Jay Smooth, who was on his way back from some important-sounding web people thing. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen dude in person, but I was struck at how different his onscreen persona is from the quiet, thoughtful cat he is in real life. I once had the privilege of sitting in on his radio show on WBAI here in New York, and was amazed at how quickly he can flip the switch to become the witty dude who always seems to have the right words at his disposal.

Anyway. Somewhere, in the attic/basement of some South Philadelphian in their late 20’s, is a middle school yearbook from 1994 containing a black and white photo of tsweeney at Brainstorm and myself, under the header “Most Likely to Succeed.” (My bank account says they were wrong.) I’m pretty sure she was wearing a plaid shirt and light jeans in this pic, and i was wearing a Drexel University sweatshirt. Fourteen years later, we’re both progressive smart-asses who live in Brooklyn. Life is funny like that. Also, contrary to what she says, it was she who was the smartest person in our middle school, possessed of a fully formed caustic wit even back then. Whenever someone mentions Homegirls potato chips, i think of her. Gost.

Our homie Jamelle is pulling double (triple?) duty over at U.S. of J., here, as well as guest-blogging for Jill over at Feministe, who is presumably still decompressing from the New York City bar exam. Latoya from Racialicious is also holding it down over at Feministe; you should really check out her first post on feminism and hip-hop).

Also, I would be remiss in not shouting out the newest additions to our blogroll, RustBelt Intellectual and SpottieOttieDopaliscious.

Good look on the props of the other blogs! I now don’t have to search as much to find thoughtful writing while I’m at work pretending to…

  • Thanks for the shout-out guys. I love your blog and Jay Smooth too; I’ve got you up on my blogroll as well. SHoot me a comment or message if you ever have anything you’re looking to highlight. Thanks and keep spitting the truth.
