Sarah Barracuda.

I may have to renege on some of what I said in defense of Palin. I thought she was a pretty ordinary politician. But with something new dropping every day about her, it’s become quite clear: the woman has earned her nickname.

Remember how Tucker Bounds got stomped by Campbell Brown over the National Guard=foreign/domestic experience thing?

John Cole at Balloon Juice:

On 31 August, an Alaskan General says Palin had no hand in decision making.

On 3 September, he says it again.

On 5 September, he completely changes his story.

On 8 September, he is promoted.

Apparently, that is change you can believe in.

You can read more here and here. Politics aside, she’s completely fascinating.

Of course, her ability to lie over and over again, without being called on it by the media contributes to the aura.

    Hey Shani,
Thanks for the link. I’ve actually come to think some in the media are doing some calling her on it. But people, in general, don’t read newspapers any more. This is all part of the epiphany that I’ve had. Republicans aren’t masters of the message, they’re masters of the second-hand message. People hear things they can repeat in a way that people will want to believe them, whether true or not. Then, when she’s accused of lying, she can say “I’m not here to please the MEDIA” and people eat that shit up.

  • QM: you beat me to it. the news media has done a pretty good job of pointing out Palin’s, um, taking license with the truth. (I don’t think it’s helped that the McCain camp has been so antagonistic toward the ‘media’.)

yep, it’s on from now until the last vote’s counted. …pure gangsterisms. thx for the post.

  • QM: I think you’re really on point about how Republicans have mastered the second-hand message. And yes, some in the media are starting to call her on the lies, but I think the press is sooooo slow to self-correct (and when they do, they tend to over-correct) that it ends up not making much of a difference.

By the time the press catches up, the whole history of whatever issue is at hand has already made the rounds on the progressive blogs. And worse, the people who get their opinions from the first round of traditional media reporting have already developed an uninformed opinion and have moved on.

You guys are correct and this is quite scary. Whatever it is they are taking it and running with it again.
I really wonder if this is what it was like for those countries/governments we studied in school and we wondered why they didn’t see what was happening or why they did do something about it.
It here and now unfolding as we speak and for the life of me i can’t think of what to do about it.
