What Is Going On In California?

I was semi-jokingly telling Dr. Bitch that California is a microcosm of America in the comments section of this post, and apparently, the California GOP just wanted to underscore my point for me.

With all the bluster about ACORN (a group that has reported its own instances of fraud), one would think that the GOP would avoid getting caught up in a legitimate case of voter registration fraud.

And yet.

SACRAMENTO — The owner of a firm that the California Republican Party hired to register tens of thousands of voters this year was arrested in Ontario over the weekend on suspicion of voter registration fraud.

State and local investigators allege that Mark Jacoby fraudulently registered himself to vote at a childhood California address where he no longer lives so he would appear to meet the legal requirement that all signature gatherers be eligible to vote in California. His firm, Young Political Majors, or YPM, collects petition signatures and registers voters in California and other states.

So.  The GOP hires a firm to register voters.  The firm gets paid $7 to $12 for each Californian it registers as Republican.  The firm’s employees trick voters into registering as Republicans by saying “they were signing a petition to toughen penalties against child molesters.”  Some of these people were told they had to change their party affiliation to Republican to sign the petition, some weren’t.

Either way, it was a lie.

Meanwhile, ACORN is being used as a weapon against Obama, when the firm itself is the real victim.  ACORN pays its employees to register voters (regardless of political affiliation), and its employees were making up names, thereby committing fraud against the organization.  This GOP-hired firm, Young Political Majors, was taking real voters and changing their party affiliations both by flat-out lying, and by omitting the truth.

Voter registration fraud is real, and we have the California GOP to thank for the illustrated lecture.

I’ll be surprised if that makes the nightly news! Thanks for the info. I have been so disturbed by the backlash against ACORN. They have been a leader in community reforms for so long, have done so much to benefit many Americans [not just politically!] and now they are being tarnished and insulted. I hope someone does some real reporting and vindicate them!

shani-o, I see you still don’t quite get it. When people and organisations that are perceived as left leaning are accused of improprities, guilt by association metastasizes into accusations against Barack Obama.

When people and organisations that are transparently right leaning, like, you know, the California GOP, are accused of improprieties, here come conservatives talking about, ‘So, if one person does/says something wrong, all Republicans are guilty?’

That said, I’m hard put to see ACORN as a victim, as I don’t believe for an instant that the people who run the organisation didn’t know, or shouldn’t have known about its employees’ hijinks.

The victim is Obama, who was made to defend an organisation that he has no direct ties to.

LH- Were you going for McCain there? Cuz I just had a flashback to the first debate. :-)

@ shani-o: Indeed. I’ve been relying on that almost non-stop since the debate. I wish more people would … get it.
